Good afternoon, everyone. It's a Tuesday edition of OnQ. Rich Kenona is here. We are diving into coaches that are on the hot seat entering the 2026 NFL season. I know exactly what you're thinking. It's not even friggin' September. We're still in August, but we got to get into it because I believe there are certain coaches. There's several. We're going to expose them for who they really are. And I think they are on absolute borrowed time getting on the conversation early and often. And I like to say, subscribe to the channel as well. Click on the notifications. We'll open up the comments. Lloyd Vance is going to join me in a couple moments. But a lot is going on right now with the NFL. A lot is going on with the NFL right now. You're going through training camp. You're seeing a boatload of injuries. You're seeing some former standout players here and there that were jettisoned having another opportunity. We'll get into more about the quarterbacks on the hot seat next week. And then before we blink, we'll do our overs and unders as far as the win totals for the 2026 NFL season. But I want to get to, and we'll go around the league with Lloyd Vance as we typically do, but I wanted to get into uh obviously, you know, the coach in carousel because you're getting a lot of first-time new head coaches in the NFL. And you're also going through kind of a, I don't want to say a changing of the guard in the NFL, but you've got prominent first-time head coaches. You've got Joe Brady with Buffalo, Jesse Minter with Baltimore, Clint Kubiak with the Raiders, and you have Half Lee with Miami. And then obviously you've got retreats. Harbaugh with the Giants. Uh obviously, Harbaugh no longer with the Ravens. You've got now McCarthy with the Steelers, McCarthy all those years with the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys winning a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers, reunited for that Swan song. Uh so again, you know, you you look around and you also saw some coordinators that have made that transition, right? Because Ben Johnson was a OC. Now obviously he's been with the Bears. Aaron Glenn took over the DC role. Now he's the head coach of the New York Jets, but they pretty much have already tried to kind of put their finger on these franchises. But I believe there are a substantial, if you think about it, there are several head coaches entering 2026 that are certainly without question on the hot seat. And I think it might surprise you, and I'll stick with the NFC East to start things off. And this is gonna be a little bit of a shock, but to me, one of the biggest names, one of the head coaches that has to win this season. And when I say win, you gotta make a deep friggin' run into the playoffs to save your job. And I think that's Dan Quinn. I really believe Dan Quinn goes into this season in the hot seat because in 2024, it was a great turnaround. They win 12 games, they make a run in the NFC Championship game, but then again, last year, what happens? Your franchise quarterback is inconsistent, he's hurt, he goes down, and you fall to 5 and 12. And Quinn, by his own admission, admitted he made a substantial amount of mistakes last season. So if I'm going top coach right now that I believe is in trouble, it's Quinn. He fired both coordinators, and now all of a sudden, and this is a critical year, you've got a first-time offensive coordinator in David Blau, who's just 30. And oh, by the way, he was on the practice squad in 2023. You've got a first-time defensive coordinator and Durante Jones. So now all of a sudden defensive personnel has been overhauled, right? And we know that Jaden Daniels is going to be motivated, even though he's dealing with the nonsense going back and forth with LSU. But Quinn to me is almost like that list, a coup de gras of head coaches that are on the hot seat. The second head coach that I think is on the hot seat, and it might be a little bit of a surprise to some, is Dan Campbell. And I know Detroit Lions fans absolutely love Dan Campbell. You are entitled to have a down year in the NFL. There's nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't say it's a genuine hot seat, but I can float it out there from a speculation standpoint that, yeah, I think so, because you know, it's a hot seat candidate. The expectations of this team is what? Make a deep run in the playoffs, get to the Super Bowl, and do something lines have never done. Get to a Super Bowl and win it. And I think that's why you can start to call into question his job security. He's got talent on both sides of the football. We know he's an extremely aggressive head coach. We know he loves to go for it on fourth down. That's never gonna change. That's just who he is. But this is a make or break year for Dan Campbell and the Lions because I still believe there are pundits out there that are waiting for the other shoe to drop when it comes to this quarterback. They're absolutely waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think Jared Goff is an exceptional quarterback, but I think there's gonna be a substantial amount of pressure on this coaching staff. So I got two right off the bat. We're gonna dive into it a lot heavy on a Tuesday edition on Q. We're powered by our good friends over at Fresh Roasted Coffee, Three Brooks Bourbon, get ready with tea. And of course, uh played against sports. Don't forget, check out the promo notes on Q20 and or BYP20. That'll get you involved in the topic of conversation. And with that, we welcome in our good friend host of Lloyd Vance's Insider Football on SR 1029 to FM the Game every Monday night, 8 to 9. Lloyd Vance, kind enough to join us on a Tuesday edition of On Q. How are you, my friend? And it doesn't sound. I think your audio is off. So uh you might have to uh jump back in, jump back on. We said there, we said his background, his background is good, but his audio is not there. So you might have to jump on and then jump back on again, Lloyd. We'll see if we can do that. There you go. We'll work through it. We always do. Lloyd does a great job. Give him a follow on SR1029FM the game, and of course, at Lloyd Vance, he's always uh kind enough to jump on. He also co-hosts with me on BYP as well. So we are diving into to start things off, we're diving into coaches that we believe are on the hot seat entering 2026. I gave you Quinn, I'm gonna give you Dan Campbell. Siriani, I see some of you guys already commenting in on X. We'll get into Siriani in a second. I think Tod Bowles is a very low-bearing fruit, very easy when you talk about coaches on the hot seat. Yes, absolutely. Todd Bowles is one of those head coaches. You might get a plethora. We've already ripped off three NFC head coaches. Think about that. We've already ripped off three. So I think uh Lloyd, you there? All right, there we go. Yeah, now let's pump you up. All right, my friend. Appreciate it as always. And as I mentioned, uh Lloyd Vance, kind enough to join us, host of Lloyd Vance's Insider Football, Sports Radio 1029, Defend the Game every Monday night, 8 to 9, and chimes in with me during the NFL season, the offseason, of course, um, one of my co-hosts for Back Your Play or Sports Gambling and Betting Pod. So uh we'll go around the league in a couple moments, my friend, but I wanted to uh get into a little more of these head coaches, and I guess we can call them early season candidates for being on the hot seat, and we haven't even started the season. I threw out two want to get your thoughts and assessment on the first one in our backyard, NFC East, Dan um Dan Quinn. I don't know why. We still can't hear you, my friend. We still can't hear you. Fiddle around, see what you got going over there. Probably gotta drop that headset. I know you don't like to do it, but you might have to, and then we'll punch up. Take your time. You might have to fire back in and then fire back off. But we will uh we'll figure it out. I don't know, it's weird. Eevee Muck sometimes the studio acts very, very goofy, and I'm not sure why that is because we never had this problem before, but we're gonna see if we can keep punching up Lloyd and see if we can get it to work because we definitely want to hear uh his analysis when we are literally talking about what's going on in the NFL, obviously. So uh we'll see we can punch him in in a second. So, as I mentioned, uh you got Quinn. Um uh you know. All right, let me go keep talking, Lloyd. Just keep talking, keep talking. One, two, keep talking, keep talking, keep talking.
SPEAKER_00True, what's up, man? There you go.
SPEAKER_03All right, don't touch nothing, my friend. All right, so let's get into it. Coup de grade, Lloyd Vance kind enough to join us again on on Q. Rich Kinuna's here. All right, uh, hey man, we worked through it. That's it is what it is. It's like our training camp right now, brother. Uh, we're working through the uh nuts and the bolts, right? We're we're we're shedding the pounds. All right, so I mentioned uh Quinn, obviously, with Washington, had that great turnaround season a couple years ago. Jaden Daniels played outstanding, didn't play like a rookie. They come back down to earth last season, 5-12. You look at some of the coordinators that he's brought in, they're very raw, they're very green. I think Quinn's put himself in a very precarious position where he's got to win and they've got to make a deep run in order for him to save his job.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's an interesting one, Q. You know, that didn't come to my mind right away, but when you talk about last year, he kind of got a pass because Adam Peters put together a roster that was a little older. And as you said, they had that um goodwill from the year before they played so well and won all his playoff games, but injuries factored big on this team. So I I think, yeah, Dan Quinn, you know, he's been there a couple of years, and and they have Joshua Harris there. Let's not forget in that new ownership group, he kind of he wants results. So but the it's gonna be tough cue because when I look at this roster, it's just there's not a lot of talent on this roster. I know they brought in Diggs and Ann McLaurin, and but the offensive line, particularly losing Laramie Tuncil, that's gonna hurt bad. So we'll see how it's going to be. But yeah, I could see him on a hot seat.
SPEAKER_03So he fired both coordinators, right? And I think now you're entrusting a 30-year-old who was on the practice squad a couple years ago with no experience, David Blau. You turn around defensive coordinator Durante Jones. You mentioned their roster. They tried to overhaul to some extent. The defensive personnel was overhauled, but a lot of it's going to be banking on the health of Jaden Daniels. I don't like the offensive weapons. I think they might have an issue trying to run the football a little bit. We know the NFC East is going to always be a competitive and tough division. And quite frankly, if you look at their schedule, come out of the gate, they have two games uh on the road to start the season. Oh, by the way, NFC East opponents, oh, by the way, on the road against the Eagles, on the road against Dallas, and then they come home for their home opener against Seattle. So if they start 0-3 and the offense struggles, I can tell you this right now, down there in D.C., they're going to start calling for his head.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and 0-3, we know Q is pretty much a death sentence. We saw Houston a couple years ago overcome that and make the playoffs, but it's just too difficult. Even 0-2, that's a big hole to get out of. We've seen teams do it, but you don't want to get off to that bad start. And it's going to be contingent upon Washington to have Jane Daniels locked in and have somebody really step up and help him because he can't take all those hits, and that offensive line's got to do a better job. Defense, kind of a no-name group there. You know, you wonder who's going to step up. And yeah, the bullseye is firmly going to be on that whole regime. And when the big thing is, as you said, when a coach gets rid of both his coordinators, he's kind of jettisoning and saying, okay, it was them, it wasn't me. Well, guess what? There's no more fall guys after you do that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that that's exactly it. And just kind of going back a little bit to this roster right now, obviously you got the vet and scary Terry, right? They bring in digs, you got McCaffrey, you got an okay tight end. Mariota is going to be out. So if Daniels gets hurt early on, they're in trouble, right? Because they don't have a reliable option as a backup. Uh, we talked a little bit about their defense. I just think it's brutal stretch to start the season. And as you mentioned, if they come out of the gate, he what is he gonna do? He's gonna blame, you know, a first-time offensive coordinator? Is he gonna blame a first-time defensive coordinator? I don't know. Was this a move to fire your defensive coordinators, like you said, to basically save face with the organization?
SPEAKER_01Basically. And it the thing is, Q, that's his specialty, though. You know what I mean? So he's calling the defense, even though now they have Durante Jones there. And uh this was his unit. So he he he's got to step up. And we know a lot of these coaches, they can't just be a CEO type. They gotta they have to be involved in game planning at some point. Yes, they don't want to, you know, in-game decisions in terms of what players are calling all that, but he's gotta have his fingerprints on it. So, yes, Dan Quinn, you know, the plume's off the roads. Everybody was telling about him in Atlanta when he was coach of the year and all that, and they made the Super Bowl and all that, but that that's a long time ago. So, yeah, I could see this going awry if this gets off to a bad start.
SPEAKER_03Well, we go from one to another that you're gonna be like, no, no, no, and I'm gonna stay in the NFC. How about Dan Campbell?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I I don't know. I I think this is a bounce back here for the Detroit Lions. I do not know.
SPEAKER_03I'm not I'm not as high on the Lions as you are. I'm not, I think they got weapons, but you know, look, he lives and dies by uh going for it on fourth down constantly, right? We know that he's a riverboat gambler, that's just who he is. But don't you think the fact that they're running it back the way they are, they're putting all their eggs in one basket, it's got to be Super Bowl or bust for a franchise. That's what in a one NFC championship game?
SPEAKER_01Yes, and and it the big thing is the big thing is the Ford family. You know, they they they like to kind of they were going through a lot of coaches at a certain point, you know what I mean? And and and so I think they want to kind of stick with the consistency. He turned the whole organization around. And let's face it, Detroit, everybody said, well, they're the one NFC team, never been to the Super Bowl, and and it's and they're they're happy with the results that they had a couple years ago. But yes, I I could see them definitely saying, okay, expectations are a lot higher. You didn't get it done at home against Washington a couple years ago when you were the favorite and you had they were the top seed.
SPEAKER_03And that's right.
SPEAKER_01You know, that so golf's got to step up. He's got to perform at a more consistent level. They got to get Jameer Gibbs to live up to that contract they gave him, Amon Ross, St. Brown. You know, they have all the names, Q. So it's incumbent on that offense to put up the points, and then defensively, they got to get healthy. They need Branch and the rest of those guys to step up and really make the place.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and they decided we got to protect the quarterback. That's why they went after Miller and drafted him out of Clemson. But they open up against the Saints at home, then Buffalo on the road, the Jets, Carolina, Arizona. So they've got some games that are very winnable. You know, a four-on-one start will silence a lot of the critics. Um, I you know, I am I am curious at what point, though, do you kind of look around and say, you know, maybe he's just not the guy? Because if you go back and you look at some of the play calling, right, uh, he's not changing. Like that's the thing. He's he, you know, he'll throw the challenge flag, he's always gonna be aggressive. But I also think at times that can be towards, you know, that can be to his detriment.
SPEAKER_01This is another guy. You know, he Johnson leaves him, and then you have Aaron Glenn going to the Jets. So he lost both his coordinators. He's got Drew Petzinger uh at the offensive side, and Kelvin Shepard, let's face it, that defense underachieved. So he's got to get these other, the main two units to step up and help him. You know, they scored a lot of points, 28 points per game last year, but they allowed 24 points. So schedule's pretty easy, the sixth easiest. That's kind of why I'm like, okay, maybe they have a chance to kind of do some things this year. And I kind of think that maybe Green Bay takes a step back in this division. But uh yeah, I could see him definitely having a bullseye on him. They went nine and eight last year, high expectations. Uh you know, two and four in the division. That's not gonna get it done. That that's just a big problem, and and the ownership's gonna take a look at that. But I I think that Sheila Ford Hemp, the owner there, she's long time, she's been there for a while. Uh, they like that figurehead of Brad Holmes at GM and Campbell. But as you said, those bad decisions, he's definitely got to cut back on him because you think about that playoff loss, Q.
SPEAKER_03The 49ers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, why are you going for all on fourth down over and over again? You sometimes just punt or make the smart play.
SPEAKER_03I I remember we dissected that play, and I I I debated it also with James Hasty, and he said by definition, it was the right call to go for it. Obviously, they didn't execute, but it wasn't the right option if you remember the receiver that they tried to get it into. And by the way, per pro football reference, yeah, the new uh rules, right? The challenge flag with these new rules. The Lions under Dan Campbell, since he took over as head coach, they're 10 for 24 on challenges. So again, you know, do with that as you will. Um, I do want to stick with the NFC. I think there's a coach that we can agree with, and I'm sure you'll have a couple as well, but Todd Bowles. Uh, and I know they're going through a little bit of a, you know, uh a change here and there. They lost some offensive weapons, they lost their catalyst, uh, and Mike Evans, who's a future Hall of Famer. Uh, we know that Baker Mayfield is not really uh happy right now, uh, as far as from a financial standpoint, what he should and he believes he should get paid. But Bowles, he's almost got a little bit of that Marvin Lewis in him, right? I mean, he's hanging around, he's hanging around, he cut his teeth because of what? The defensive side of the football. But I never liked him as a head coach.
SPEAKER_01Q, he's been there a long time now. Uh I I think it's fifth season or so. Yeah, Bruce Arians leave and kind of handed him a team that won a Super Bowl. So, and kind of underachieved last year eight and nine, and and a lot of talent on his team. You know, some guys did get old, they had some defections, but you expect more, you know, only scoring about 22 points per game. And then that defense, you talk about that's supposed to be his side of the ball. They allow 24 points per game. So, you know, they're allowing more than they're scoring. That's not a good thing. And and then they're one and four down a stretch last year because let's face it, they were in very good playoff position, and then they just kind of spit the bit and three and three in a division. I know it's a very winnable division, but he's got to get it done. And and in particular, uh maybe blitzing too much. You know, maybe his base defense has got to get better and and the personnel's got to execute better. So yeah, I definitely agree that there's a bullseye on Todd Bowles going in this season.
SPEAKER_03I know it's not a head coach, but I do want to get your thoughts because it's in our backyard. You know, we see that uh the Eagles, I mean, look, I think it's low-bearing fruit if we talk about Siriani, right? Um, but I I'll just kind of say this. You know, when you get some of these coordinators, that jettison or maybe coming off a Super Bowl win, like we saw with Kubiak, uh, and now obviously, you know, um he he's gone, you know, the the Minters, the Monkins, which we'll get into in a moment. But, you know, let's talk a little bit about the Philadelphia Eagles for a second, because now you've got an offensive coordinator, uh, Sean uh Sean Mannion, right? And I I just, you know, I feel as though they're going down this path, right? I mean, he's 34, you got an active NFL roster, right? Uh, you know, he was on an NFL active roster as recently as 2023, never called plays before. So if you kind of go back, Steichen was really good 2021, 2022. Then he takes the coach, um, head coaching gig with the Colts. Uh, Johnson was bad in 2023. Moore, uh, not bad, 2024, took the Saints coaching job. And then Kevin Batulo, who was hand-picked by Sirianni, was horrible. So, um, you know, you talk about the philosophies and manions bringing in different philosophies that I think are going to be a challenge. Also, a change when it comes to quarterback Jalen Hurts. So, because Ciriani now goes out and hires another offensive coordinator, do you believe Mannion's on the hot seat, or you give him a little bit of a free pass? And then does it directly tie with Sirianni if it doesn't work out Sirianni potentially being on the hot seat?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you had some great points there, Q, in terms of Petula. You know, that that was his boy. Remember, I kept saying that all last year. He wouldn't demote him, he wouldn't take the play calling from him. And, you know, Siriani, his success is cloud of kind of clattered his judgment, Q. You know, yes, he's been to two Stuart Bowls. He won one, and and you know, he thinks he can do no wrong. But I there were points last year where he needed to step up and be the CEO of this team, take control of the ship. And the thing about all those three now is they led the National Football League in that. And offense is, I know he was a receiver's coach, and and he wasn't you know one of these boy geniuses like McVeigh or something, but he needed to get involved more and and maybe take Patulo, take it away from him, but he wouldn't do that. And and court officer knows his face face. Now Manu's coming in there, as you said, kind of green, but everybody's telling me that oh he he was part of McVeigh's staff, but underneath of him as a backup quarterback knows what he's doing. And so, yeah, I could see the heat on both of them to get it done. And this is a new installation for the offense. Uh, the quarterback is under pressure as well. And then a big thing is you have no stoutlin there in the offensive line. Nope. You know, and and that group up front was very beat up, and they were the key to Saquon running for that 2,000 and the Super Bowl run. And then Fangio, this is his last season, you know. Is he going to be dialed in defensively? So a lot of question marks in the Philadelphia Eagles as they come out of training camp.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and you go back history-wise with the Philadelphia Eagles, especially with offensive coordinators, they either hit home runs, they take these huge leaps, or they get run off by season's end. I mean, that's the you know, you can I know we don't want to sit there and keep saying it's another offensive coordinator for Jalen Hurts. It's another offensive coordinator, but that's the reality, right? I mean, that's that's just where we're at right now. They, I think also, too, that their offense was so stagnant. There was no rhythm or line last year. They would have, you know, just stretches where they couldn't run the football, they couldn't pass the football, they couldn't convert third down, they couldn't sustain drives. I mean, you cannot have quarterbacks not completing a pass in second half of games, in playoff games. You know, the other thing is the offensive line, I don't believe there's a ton of depth, and it's getting older. So Saquon has his, you know, uh record break in his historic season two seasons ago, and then he has a ridiculous drop off because I think they ran him into the ground, and we know the history of Saquon Barkley, especially, you know, with his tenure with the New York Giants. If they can't run the ball, and now you have no AJ Brown and you're really gonna try to focus now on Smith, or they double Smith, and then you're looking at these other wide receivers to step up and make plays or get the tight end involved, they're gonna be in trouble. I mean, I'm not listening I'm not suggesting that they're gonna be a four, five, six-win team. Absolutely not. But if you take Smith out of the equation, you know, Wicks doesn't scare me, Lemon's already banged up, Goddard's been a mainstay, Brown doesn't scare me, Moore doesn't scare me. You know, right now it's Saquon. And you stack the box and you bang him around a little bit, his yards per average dips. That's one of the reasons I think they need to get Tank Bisby, uh Bigsby involved a lot more. But I think bringing in another coordinator, knowing that you know, your quarterback is also going into a very key season. I mean, that's a conversation for another day. I don't know. I I don't want to sit here and suggest it was a panic move, but I think this is a move where Ciriani is really trying as hard as to jump start this offense.
SPEAKER_01It is. He's he's another one. He's trying to take the pressure off of him and point in another direction. It's like, okay, what are we doing here? You know what I mean? Yes, you had that success, you won the Super Bowl, but every season's different, and they were hunted last year, and they just limped home last year, three and four in their last seven games last year, Q. You talk about they were bottom six after week 10. You know what I mean? In terms of their offense, they just could not get anything going. So they can say it was Petula, they can say, you know, Hurts wasn't doing his thing, AJ Brown. Well, just something was amiss. And then you saw it really come to head in that playoff loss to San Francisco, where they didn't do anything. So um Roseman, Lori have not given those extensions out to Sirianni and uh Jalen Hurts. You know, that that speaks volumes. So they they want to see results, they want to see this team step up this season. And yeah, they won back-to-back divisions last year for the first time in forever. But now Dallas has gotten a little better. The Giants had they got some young talent coming in there, and then you have Washington. So it's gonna be interesting how this Eagles team steps up this year.
SPEAKER_03Rudy the boxer, Eagles coaches a little weasel. Michael chimes in. Good day, Rich. What's going on, Michael? How are you, brother? And then um, obviously, we got the other Michael. Uh Jesse Miners on the hot seat with the Ravens fan. Harbaugh was and still a favorite of Baltimore, so he better win, in my humble opinion. Wow, you're sticking. I mean, you're already going to Minter just like that. I mean, you know, the other thing is you've got some first-time young head coaches uh who really don't have you know head coaching experience, which that's another thing. I mean, think about this, right? So you look at Kubiak, he had that great run as a uh OC with Seattle. Minter, now stepping up as a rookie head coach. Brady promoted from offensive coordinator, halfly. Remember, you know, again, transition from college and now coordinator roles in the NFL, you know, and we saw it several years ago with Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn. So you've got some young first-time head coaches, Brady, Minter, Kubiak, and Halfley right now. And the expectation is I would say out of those four, two of them need to win because they already have quarterbacks in place, and that's Brady and Buffalo, and then Minter and Baltimore.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and there's expectations going into season, you know, that they thought those teams underachieved. That's why they're making changes in terms of the head coach and and especially Baltimore. You know, Lamar Jackson's three and five in the playoffs. He's sniffing 30. You know, he's been there a while. And Josh Allen's been there a while as well, both of them. And and their fan base is saying isn't it's now or never. So yeah, they're changing coaches. So yes, there's there's some pressure on those guys. I don't think they'll be let go or anything. Now, another young coach I'll throw in there is LaFleur with the uh Cardinals. You got to put him on a hot seat, right? But that's a bad roster in terms of the Cardinals. They just lost love their running back for quite some time, and you're just wondering, are they going to be able to change things and get over the home? So it that's one to watch in terms of perk steer head coaches on hot seat.
SPEAKER_03Wow, that's interesting. Now, what about the other LaFleur in Green Bay?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, his brother, Q, he's been there a lot of years, and it seems like every year they were what, like 13-3, 13-4, uh, get to the playoffs, but they just can't get it done either. You know, Love's got what, one playoff win, I think, in his career or something like that. And, you know, he's got all his great regular season stats, but it it's now or never in terms of stepping up in terms of the playoffs. So that division's extremely tough. We saw three teams make it to the playoffs last year. We were talking about Detroit earlier, and I think the Vikings are going to be a little better with Kyler Murray, a quarterback. So, yeah, I think the pressure's on it, and they definitely got to find, you know, a running game. You know, I I'm just not sure about Josh Jacobs at this point in his career.
SPEAKER_03Uh Ruiz says NFL getting harder to watch by the year. I think because what happens is we know there's four or five really good quarterbacks in the NFL. Then it's kind of like saturated and watered down. You can also talk about uh the officiating, right? We know the officiating has really been bad. I think it's a grind the season, it's a long season. We also know defenses are always ahead of the offenses in the beginning of the season as well. Um do you have any other before we come go around the league, uh any uh coach or two that maybe we didn't talk about or I missed, or or one or two that you've got.
SPEAKER_01There's two, and they're both both my guys are AFC, you know, and I'll start with the Indianapolis Colts. You have Carly Ursay Gordon taking over for her father, and she's right on the sidelines with a headset, overwatching everything. So you have Shane Steichen who's been there a while, and and his buddy Gannett got let go by the Cardinals last year, and and you know, Balor's there to GM position. Both those guys are on the hot seat. So I think definitely Ursay Gordon's gonna have an eye on his team. They're gonna need, obviously, Danny Jones come back healthy from that injury and lean on Jonathan Taylor and Alec Pierce. That was interesting signing. You know, you wonder about them uh in that ankle injury. He got that surgery so late, and he he hasn't really been practicing a lot in training camp. So you've got to keep your eye on that. And then defensively, it's kind of a hodgepodge of people. So other than Sauce Gardner, you don't have a lot of names on that Colt's defense. So definitely watch Rashad Steik in last year, eight and nine. Uh and then there were two and four in their division.
SPEAKER_03So let me I I am I want to get back to that, but they also decided to re-sign Daniel Jones and give him that contract extension. Coming off major injury. So I'm wondering, does that give him a little bit of wiggle room? Right? Because we we know at the end of the day who Daniel Jones is. Daniel Jones is not gonna last an entire season. You can write it in stone.
SPEAKER_01Right. And he they gave him that contract off that goodwill of them playing so early in the season and he played so great, and then he went out, and then you know you got Philip Rivers in their loot seven-game loser streak to end the season. So, you know, give him the reprieve. We'll see how he plays. I still think that Daniel Jones, as you were kind of alluding to, will revert back to old form and you know, we'll have the fumbles and taking sacks for holding the ball too long. But this is a definitely a season where this whole regime is on a hot seat because you have that new owner coming in there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm not, you know, there's a couple other coaches. I I mean, look, I I think there's pressure to always win. Like right away, you know there's pressure for Harbaugh to win early with the Giants. You know, here's I well, I'm actually surprised you didn't bring up another coach.
SPEAKER_01Well, I was gonna bring one more. Maybe it's this guy.
SPEAKER_03And and I'm I I I know who it's gonna be. It's AFC, correct?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03Is it your guy Zach Taylor?
SPEAKER_01Yes, it is. Yeah, and he's been there. Well, Q, he's been there too long. But the thing is with Mike Brown as the owner, you know, they don't like to change anything. He's cheap and all that. And then, you know, he sticks with the one he brought to the dance, and he had Marvin Lewis there for so many years. But 6 and 11 last year, and and you talk about the offensive firepower this team's assembled, you know, and Higgins and Chase, and and you got Joe Burrow when he's healthy, it's one of the best quarterbacks out there, and and Chase Brown is a good young back. So, yeah, they the expectations are high. They have a pretty easy schedule this year, the third easiest in the National Football League. But that defense, they allow 29 points per game. Uh Al Golden came in there, you know, from Notre Dame, and he didn't do much of fixing that defense. I know they're bringing in Dexter Lawrence and some other pieces, but that defense has got to step up, and and yeah, I think Taylor's gonna be on a hot seat.
SPEAKER_03You know what's crazy? He's had uh four winning seasons, but let's be honest, two of those years were nine and eight, and then they went to the Super Bowl. They could have won it, right? They won 12 games, they won 10 games. Aside from that, as you mentioned, 52, 63, and one. And how much, you know, how much do you also put, you know, injuries happen, right? When you lose a quarterback or you don't draft well, that typically falls on the GM. You know, it's a shared responsibility, right? I I think he's on borrowed time. And you know, the window with Burrow is closing big time because you're also playing in a very good division. If they go, I don't know, seven and ten, you can definitely see a change at the end of the season.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I could see, you know, that if Mike Brown finally is like, okay, enough's enough, and Duke Tovan, who's the GM there, maybe they do finally say, okay, we need to bring in another coach. And and at one point, Zach Taylor was that young mind, you know, he learned under McVeigh, and he was that offensive genius, but the offense kind of stagnant. Last year they only put up 24 points per game, you know. So it's like you have all these weapons, they need Burrow healthy, obviously, is a big piece of this, but the offensive line has always been patchwork, and I don't think that helps a brittle quarterback.
SPEAKER_03Uh Rudy says as a Colts fan, it's embarrassing. And then he adds in, it's not the coach, it's the GM. That's something that we've talked about, right? At the end of the day, right? I mean, you can pick your poison, whether it's the Colts, whether it's Cincinnati. Sometimes you have bad GMs and the coach is put in a really friggin' bad spot. I mean, look at the nonsense for years that was going on in Chicago or Cleveland or hell with the Giants, right? So, yeah, I mean, it it's got to be the right fit. And remember now, the GM, some owners will allow the GM to hire the head coach, or the owner steps in if you're looking for the GM or the head coach, they hire the head coach and they hire the GM, but at the end of the day, they've got their decision making, and then the coach signs off on it, and you build the roster and you run with it.
SPEAKER_01Correct. The coach, the GM, the quarterback, they got to be hand and glove. You know, they got to all work together because typically they're bringing them together as a unit and to change you know the face of a franchise a lot of times. And and yeah, some of these GMs they they they keep their job, and you're just like, wow, how did that happen? And and Chris Ballard, as you were saying, they even asked him this offseason, is he on a hot seat? And he agreed. So, you know, with Jim Erstay passing away, his daughter taking over, yeah, she's definitely got her eye on he he's had a couple good picks like Tyler Warren, but he's had some misses as well. So uh they're gonna be an interesting squad to watch, and that's a winnable division. You know, they they should play better than they did. I was saying earlier, two and four in a division, that's not gonna get it done. 0-5 in her last to end the season. So it's there, they definitely got to step up because Ursay Gordon, she's definitely has her eye on changing things up there.
SPEAKER_03Michael says the NFL is hard to watch when your team stinks. Yeah, I mean, don't you come on? Who you tell? I'm a Giants fan. NFL TV viewership has generally seen a decline, average drop 8% reported 2016 season compared to previous years. Factors such as political events changes. Uh last year the Super Bowl did really, really well, though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the the the NFL I get all the stats he said to me from NFL media that they're still top 10 shows of of anything. So I I would bump the brakes on that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that yeah. I mean, again, it's not it's it I mean the Hall of Fame game, right, which was a high scoring average seven million, which is ridiculous. Pre-season, pre the draft did 13, right? And then 6.7 across. I mean, the the the the Texans in the Pats game did almost 40 million. So and by the way, Goodell comes out today, and what does he say? He talks about what we've talked about for years now quote, no no doubt the NFL is gonna have a team based outside the U.S. I I mean they are when you talk about a cash cow and the billions and the billions, and I don't foresee a scenario that Jacksonville would get placed over there, but you know they're gonna try to grab a team in Europe. You know they're gonna try to grab a team in Germany or London or Spain or you know, even in Mexico. I mean, I guarantee you within five to seven years, you're gonna have four extra teams expansion, and they're playing outside the states.
SPEAKER_01If they can work out a logistics, Q, there I definitely agree with you that they are trying to expand overs in Europe and even further. You know, you see them going to Australia, you're going to Germany, you know, all these places having games for the first time. People can't get enough National Football League. And the other sports leagues, it's not even close. They can't even compare in terms of viewership and just people's passion for the National Football League. And, you know, what we always say about back your play, you know, that that's got something to do with too. You know, the gambling and and fantasy football, you know, people just can't get enough for National Football League.
SPEAKER_03You know, we talk a lot, obviously, NBA and the hoops and the WNBA. And um uh Michael, the Broncos fan, made a great comment the other day. Once the NFL starts, everything's dwarfed. It doesn't even matter. Unless it's game seven of a pennant, right, or a playoff series in baseball, or you say the Yankees are in it against the Giants on Monday night, you're gonna get that split, but you're still gonna get it. The Giants are playing Dallas, I guarantee you no one's concerned about baseball, especially come postseason time. Uh, point is no matter what they do, they're always going to be number one. They're gonna be numero uno. It's it's never going to change. And you mentioned the logistics. I mean, I believe if they do have expansion, then what does that tell you? They expand the season. Because there's no way logistically you can only re- I I can't have a team flying overseas and then coming back on a Monday expecting them to play on a short week on a Thursday.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and and Robert Kraft was talking about this at the last owners' meetings. Like, okay, maybe have two buys now rather than one. And obviously, if it and the CBA's coming up, I think around 2030. They they're going to discuss expanding at least to that 18th game. You know what I mean? It's coming. You know what I mean? The more games they regular season games they can have, the better, because as you're saying, viewership's up. They have all these TV partners, Netflix, Prime, you know, games all over the place. We we joke about there's a game almost every night of the week, you know what I mean, and people are going to watch.
SPEAKER_03I I I still believe we are going to get to the point. I've said this for years. It's going to be a la carte, where if you want to watch certain games or a certain team, then you'll pay for that game pretty much like at a premium cost, meaning every Sunday. So it could be like a pay-per-view, it could be $19.99 to watch, right? So I yeah, it's just uh I don't know. I mean, we we can talk about it all day long. I want to kind of go around the league. The Cowboys just signed uh Von Miller, which I mean kind of is it desperate? Is it smart? I know Michael chimed in and said, you know, what what what do we think? Um we know they had to shore up their defense.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and they you know they allowed 511 points last year, worst national football league, around 30 points per game. So they're just trying to bring in anybody that can. Obviously, last year, Jadevian Clowney came in there, you know, the veteran guy. He he got some heat and pressure. Uh, and now they're bringing in Vaughan Miller at 37, had nine sacks last year for Washington. So they bring him in obvious passing downs. And we've seen this with veteran guys in the past, you know, think of Dwight Freeney at the end of his career, Justin Houston.
SPEAKER_02Chris Long.
SPEAKER_01Yes, Chris Long. You know, and and these guys, they bring value team, they bring leadership to the locker room. They have that championship pedigree in the past. And, you know, he still has some gas left into the tank. And if he's not gonna play all three downs, they just bring him in obvious passing situations and allow him to work off of Quentin Williams, who's one of the best defensive tackles in the game.
SPEAKER_03My man Shiloh hanging out on Orlando chimes in. Um, there's gonna be a team in Canada soon enough. CFL in Canada is not exciting. I think he was in Orlando. Shiloh wasn't. He lives in Canada. Uh, but he's a sports fan. I live in Ontario. There you go. And only watch Chiefs now that Manning is gone. Uh CFL. Listen, I know a couple guys that played in the CFL. Uh Nick Lewis is one of the all-time uh leading receptions leader in the CFL. Uh he's um created AO Sports. I know he was telling me, you know, obviously it's still popular in Canada. We know they uh are more inclined to hockey, right? But it's a possibility. I I think there's going to be expansion no matter what, but I say within five years. Like they know the London, they know Germany, they know Berlin, they know this the European market. They're tapping it, right? That's one of the reasons that Jacksonville's always playing over there. They love the international game, they love that game, even though the product stinks. But you know, you I I don't know. I don't see any other teams in certain markets in the states. I think it's pretty much set right now. So I believe it'll probably be four more teams within five to seven years. But as you alluded to, it's got to make sense logistically.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and and I don't know about CFL moving to Canada, you know, the NFL going up there because they have a loose partnership. They they basically say, all right, we're not going to step on your in your backyard. And that league's been there for a long time. And as you said, the Canadian fans, they they love their CFL. You know, there's they love three downs a punt, you know, in the long field and in different roles. And and they also, in terms of the rosters, make sure that a lot of the players are Canadian, that they can only have so many guys that you know of that nationality. So yeah, I'd I I know the Bills went up there a couple years ago and played some games and and all that when their stadium was getting worked on. But uh, yeah, I'd I think it'll definitely be your first because you can see the footprint already there, you know, in terms of them putting these games in all those, you know, London and the London series. I think there's like four games over there this year.
SPEAKER_03Uh a little housekeeping. Uh we'll get into uh the Jets for a second. Brees Hall got nicked up. He's gonna miss about two to three weeks. I mean, this is the last thing you want to hear if you are a uh uh a Jet fan. Aaron Glenn kind of poo-pooed it. The Giants turnaround. I don't know if they're trying to see what the hell they can get out of Najee Harris. I think that's more or less because they know that Scataboo is injury prone. And here's the other thing. I watched that game. You know, if you are a running back in the friggin' NFL, especially a young running back in the NFL, you better be able to make an impact on special teams and you better be able to pick up the blitz. And Tracy didn't do that, and that's when friggin' Jackson Dark got drilled and I had to go to the tent. So um, you know, thoughts on uh Brees Hall. It doesn't seem to be like it's um a major thing, should be ready by uh uh opening day, the the season open. And then uh your thoughts on Harris with the Giants.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sure. You know, in terms of these injuries, Q, it's crazy soft tissue injuries all around the National Football League. And and just talking about so many of these guys and you know, are they going to make it to week one? And and that's why you're not seeing them in these preseason games, a lot of them. So, you know, I think Brees Hall, they do need him. You know, we talked over and over again about Aaron Glenn on the hot seat. They're probably gonna be one of the worst teams in the national football. League when you look at their roster. So they need him to step up and make some plays for him. In terms of, yeah, Harris, they're bringing him in for a looksie. You know, he's a veteran guy. As you said, they're probably not sold on those two young running backs, particularly when you tell about Taylor missing that block and then a quarterback getting killed. I talked to a lot of coaches over the years, an old running back coach, I remember him saying to me, he was like, I don't care about a guy running the ball. He better be able to pick up that blitz and protect the quarterback and then catch an outlet pass where we can't use him on the field.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, listen, Harris just had to deal with some injuries, but other than that, you know, he's had his four uh his first four out of five years uh in the NFL. He went over a thousand yards, and Tracy's a young running back. You got to understand the pick up the blots, right? You got to understand um the blitz scheme in your assignment. And and he didn't. And I I actually did want to bring up uh a question or another point with you. Uh you you mentioned Aaron Glenn, and it's so low-bearing fruit. I mean, I I believe the Jets are gonna be a really bad team this year. I I do. I I I just think he's not fit to coach. Uh, he doesn't know how to make adjustments, he doesn't know how to handle the media in New York. And as we know, just because you were a very good or great coordinator, it doesn't necessarily translate to success as a head coach. Now, I looked at their games to open up the season. They go on the road against Tennessee. If they lose that game, that is going to set the tone, kind of like it did last year to open up the season. They've got Green Bay and Detroit and Chicago. Those are losses. Then they have Cleveland. That could be a loss. Then they have New England. They can be staring down the barrel of one and five, oh and six. So I'm just kind of cautioning the Jet fans out there because they should have fired him late in the season after they did absolutely nothing. They were remember, they were 0-6. They were 0-6 and then finally got their first win late October. And then the last four to five games, they pride themselves on defense. They gave up 34-48, 29-42, and 35. They should have made a head coaching change after the season.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you don't like to fire somebody after one season, Q. But yeah, when it's bad, it's bad.
SPEAKER_03Well, sometimes if it's bad, I mean, we we saw it, right? I mean, Judge, right? Shermer, uh, what's uh uh Urban Meyer, we've seen it.
SPEAKER_01Right. And and 0-6 in the division, 0-5 the end of season, as you were saying, 2-7 at home. It's just like, wow, this team's bad. And this is this is another situation where he gets rid of his coordinators and he's like, okay, it was them, it wasn't me. I need some help here, you know. Give me some time, you know. All the bad coaches say, give me some more time. Aaron Glenn is firmly on the hot seat, and he's bringing up Frank Reich to kind of clean up that defense. Brian Duger trying to clean up that defensive side, but that's really Aaron Glenn's calling card. And 3-14 team, yeah, you're you're definitely gonna have the bullseye on. And they only scored 17.6 points per game last year. And as a defensive coach, you know, coming over for the Lions with that pedigree and everything, they allowed 29.6. Not good. You know, 31st in the national football. Only the Cowboys defense was worse. And then they start trading away players. And you look at the roster and you're like, wow, there's just not a lot here. And Geno Smith already injured. And are you talking about playing rookie K club nick? It's just like a disaster waiting to happen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, 100%. Joey says, about time, let's go. Talking a little football. Thank God for Lloyd Vance. Uh Shiloh chimes in. Question for you both Does the league have or will ever have a back as special as Barry Sanders? I watched a video about him uh and can't think of anyone currently playing that is like him. I mean, Barry Sanders was uh he was an absolute special, special back. I mean, you know, the low center of gravity, the vision, played the game the right way, hit the hole. I think deceptively strong, deceptively fast. Look, he's he's there's I I look at these running backs right now, and some of them are still in their infancy and their careers. Some of them are different types of backs, like Derrick Henry's a Hall of Fame back, but he's a bruiser. Barry Sanders wasn't a bruiser, right? So I it's a great question. I mean, there was only one Barry Sanders.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's one of one, you know, as the kids would say. And he's just like, wow, he he was incredible in terms of just his vision and and avoiding the big hit. And he would have broken Emmett Smith's record if he hadn't retired so early. And and you know, on my show, we were talking about records that may not be broken. And you talk about that running back rushing record with Emmett Smith, he's just like, wow, who can possibly get it? As you said, Derek Henry is the highest active guy at this point, but the running backs just take such a beating, and you have to have, you know, put together a 10-year run where you're running for like 1,500 yards a season, and it's just a lot of pounding on these guys. Smith had that great offensive line, and a lot of these guys don't have that luxury. So uh it'll be interesting to see if there's another Barry Sanders, another guy who can break Emmett Smith's record.
SPEAKER_03But he also late in his career, you got to call for what it is. He was a 33, 34, 35-year-old back, just kind of like hanging around compiled to to break the record. I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about 93, 94, 95, Emmett Smith. I'm not talking about 96, 97, but towards the tail end of his career, because as you mentioned, they all break down. You know, he's picking up another 2,000 yards in three seasons, right? Um, so it's like, okay, I get it. You know, you're just kind of hanging on. Look, Derek Henry, I I don't know if there's been a back that we've seen that has I I mean, can I say gotten better as he's gotten older? Because to me, he's he's like a freak of nature, Derek Henry.
SPEAKER_01He is his workout regime is incredible. And you know, you just wonder at his size, you know, he he's taking he's not running around people sometimes, you know, he's running through them. So, you know, but he he he's a quality guy and and he's kept himself healthy and and you know the rating is like feeding him to football. So yeah, last year, what he meant, like 1600 yards last year, 307 carries. He had 2,000 last year the year before. So yeah, he you're wondering this guy's a machine. Is he ever going to break down? Because we you and I talked about, I think, like a couple weeks ago, all these backs, like they just at once he hit 30, man, it's almost just like what happened to him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I look, you mentioned Todd Gurley's, you know, I know Chris Johnson dealing with a lot of stuff, you know, thoughts and prayer to him, but some of these backs that have 300 plus carries and then their numbers drop, but it's weird because Derrick Henry's actually didn't drop like Saquon's did. They just didn't. And Derrick Henry's sitting right around 13,000 plus yards. If he's played, he's 31. If he plays four more seasons and he averages 1,200 yards, that's 48, right? So I gotta do my math. I mean, does that that's you're still short of the 18,000 of Emmett Smith.
SPEAKER_01He'd be in the neighborhood, you know. Yeah, it'd be interesting, you know. Everybody talk about Adrian Peterson and him early in his career, he was had a shot, you know, he's what was he MVP to one year, you know what I mean? And but just things happen. And and coaches, as you were saying, they move on from running backs because if a guy is not explosive anymore and and he can, you know, can't help out on special teams, a guy a younger guy can, they'll bring somebody younger in, you know what I mean. And the big thing is drafting these guys so high in terms of running back, you can get a running back in in different rounds. You know, you don't have to draft them in the first five picks.
SPEAKER_03Just to put it in perspective, Lloyd, Derek Henry right now, when you talk about all-time leading uh rushers yards-wise, obviously it's Emmett and then Peyton and then Gore in number three. I mentioned Gore because Gore is sitting at 16,000 yards. Peyton is at 16,726. Derrick Henry, if he played three more years, is going to break. You know, he'll be one two. It'll be one, two, it'll be Emmett and Derrick Henry. Which is crazy when you think about because everyone else, you got Eric Dickerson, Jerome Bettis, Tom Lissenson at 13 plus, you got Curtis Martin, AP at 14, Barry at 15 and change, Frank Gore right at 16,000 yards, which is crazy. Right at 16,000, here we go. Kiss him goodbye, good night, retire. But Derek Henry is gonna leapfrog. He's gonna he's gonna be when this year alone, if he rushes for you know, 15, 16, 17, he's gonna be top five. Well, he's got to have 1900 yards to get to top five, but anything other than that, he'll be right around six or seven.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's all-time great, you know, and you know, the stiff arm, and he he could take it to the house still. He still has that burst. You know, he's not that dual threat guy like Damian Thomlinson or anything like that, but he's a pure running back. That's it, he's a throwback, too. You know, you remember when we were coming along, he was always that running back that was the bell cow, and that's what he is.
SPEAKER_03Joey says we need the video footage of uh Walter Payton with the kangaroo running up the mountains, man. That's what he did. One more yard, one more yard, right? Keep pushing. I mean, Walter Payton, again, uh these are special backs, man. I got to see Bo run live, wow, in the Coliseum back in the day. That's crazy. And remember, too, you know, that playoff game against Cincinnati, he was going off, and then obviously he had the hip injury. That's that is a that's wow, man. I would have loved there. Like up close and personal. Bo Jackson is one of them because of the way he was, you know, Bo Jackson, he didn't work out, he did push-ups and sit-ups, he was just naturally gifted and huge. Did you see the 30 for 30 on Marcus Dupree?
SPEAKER_01Yes, you know, he's one of those guys coming out of high school, he's winning all timers. And then you think about it, he went to the Rams after not playing for a while, and he had that great season. It just shows you what could have been.
SPEAKER_03Remember, he played in the preseason. I remember the game against the Giants, and they they they kept him, then they eventually cut him. But he also, I believe, was playing USFL, banked a lot of money, never got the money. You know, the contract, everything was a bit um just kind of goofy. But the running back position, the way the NFL is right now, it's not the sexy, glorified position it was back in the day. Because as you mentioned, a lot of teams, the way they construct their roster, they construct their offense is they want to turn around and you know, they have a full back, they have a lead blocker, or maybe they go running back by committee. So, like, enjoy the backs that we're seeing, kind of like the backs that we saw 10, 15, 20 years ago. Look, Robinson, to me, I believe this kid is going to be a special back. Now, he might go on and have a wonderful career and just be a product of being stuck on a bad franchise, but Taylor's a great runner, you know, Henry's a great runner, Hall of Famer, Cook is a great runner. Saquon, if he can maintain this pace and regroup and stay healthy, very there's look, the years of getting a thousand yards, remember, we would sit there and say that's a hell of a year. Now, I mean, come on, man. You had 17 backs that had over a thousand yards last year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and a 17-game season is not that hard to do. Right. And I call it the eyeball test. You know, the old scouts that I talk to, they always say that, you know, your eyes are gonna not gonna lie to you. And some guys may get a thousand, but it's like the old buddy Ryan joke, you need a thousand carries to get a thousand yards. You know what I mean? So it's like uh some guys are special, and yeah, I think Gibbs is gonna have a big year. I think Robson's gonna have a big year, and it's gonna be fun to watch.
SPEAKER_03I see prospects like this. The players seem to do best when they have a contract coming up. Take a look at Cleese on the Chiefs, he's hanging on for record. Oh, Kelsey on the Chiefs, he's hanging on for record, seems like not a love of the game. Yeah, but remember too, you know, who did he marry? Right? I mean, Travis Kelsey don't have to worry about money anymore. I think Kelsey and the Chiefs and Mahomes, they wanted to run it back to kind of remind everyone they haven't gone anywhere. That's still one of the teams that I think is gonna take uh a step back. Uh Joey says uh Bo is special for sure. I was lucky enough to see him play for the Royals. Wow. That's crazy. That's like saying you saw Jordan play in the minor leagues. You know, do you there's there's a couple of social media accounts that um do like the old time when um Summerall and Madden were calling the games and then you saw the promo for Sunday night and you knew you're like, oh shit, bedtime's right around the corner, the 60 minutes murder she wrote, right? But I remember, man, those Monday night games in the heyday when Monday Night Football, like that was an event, and you had the best teams, the best players, the best position players. So you were watching the Marcus Allen's to Tony Dorsett's to Bo Jacksons. I mean, the list goes on and on and on, but it's just they're getting paid, but I still think it's a dying position if that makes sense. Like they understand their value, but it's not like it once was.
SPEAKER_01No, it's a passing league first. You know what I mean? It was always you fall to guy in college back in the day, a running back. He won the Heisman Trophy, and then he came to NFL, and you're like, oh, I can't wait to see that guy. I can't, you know, and they would hand it to him 25, 30 times a game, and then they would just they carry teams, but yeah, now it's all the quarterbacks are rage. You know, the rules are set for the receivers not to get touched, and and and they're throwing the ball 40 times easy a game. And and the kids are all playing seven on seven uh in terms of um you know at the high school level and even in college, you know, there's passing league all over all over the place.
SPEAKER_03Talking they they I we had to break up the monotony from the WNBA, which we'll get into tomorrow, guys. Talking real ball. I love the hand though. Hey, Rich, my guy. Now we're on the real sport. NFL is now a passing league. Today the running back is more valuable as a receiver coming out of the backfield against a linebacker. It's a great point. You they want that scat back, they want that back that can pick up the blitz, the wheel routes, you know, the slants, get them out of the backfield. But that's you know, that's that's an interesting point he brings up because I go back and there are maybe a handful of teams back in the day that really ran this, you know, Baltimore can run the screen. New Orleans for years can run the screen. The Eagles with Westbrook killing the Giants all the time can run the great screen. That's another thing I think has kind of gone away from the offensive playbook, right? How many times you sit there when the blitz comes or all of a sudden they're overloading the box, and then you see the quarterback drop back spin around and you see an opportunity for a screen pass. Uh, we just don't see that anymore. But to his point, which is a great one, it's a valid one. You know, if you're gonna have the backpack there and you're gonna pay him, you might as well utilize them in a variety of ways.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's that Bill Walsh playbook, you know, that West Coast that went all over the place. Mike Holmgren had it with the Packers. And yeah, they they lived on a screen pass, you know, to move the chains. And now certain teams are using it a lot. The Niners are one of them, you know, McCaffrey's gonna catch a ton of passes, and and uh now Bijan Robinson um with the Falcons, they're using kind of a similar scheme, getting him in space, make you know, make one guy miss, and then you can kind of take it to the house. So yeah, that they need backs that can catch, pick up a blitz, and it's a demanding position, and that's why they just get beat up so physically.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Again, uh Tuesday edition on Q. Rich Kanyon is here. Lloyd Vance, kind enough to join us, does a great job. Follow him on X at Lloyd Vance, NFL Insider Historian. Also a host of Lloyd Vance's Insider Football Monday night, SR 1029 FN the Game, of course, uh Coastal Sports Digital Network, and one of my co-hosts for back your play, which we will be firing off very, very soon. Our sports, bending, and gambling pod. Don't forget, hit the notifications. Uh, you know, with the preseason, we know we're gonna deal with some injuries, but you and I have covered this league for so long. When you talk about the preseason, it really is about certain position battles and depth. Now, obviously, you have a little more of a focus on your show with Kevin on Monday night uh with the NFC East and the Philadelphia Eagles. I I mean, how much do you take away from what we just saw uh this past weekend in preseason, especially with the Philadelphia Eagles?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, with all the teams, you want to see the young guys step up and find somebody that's gonna be that get that last roster spot. And and with the Eagles, I'm I'm watching this receiver crew because it's like everybody said about Darius Cooper, but what's he he looks nice in a preseason, but if we put him in a regular season game, no disrespect, what what's he gonna, you know, against guys that are you know all pro corners and shut down corners and DBs. Right. So, you know, they they have Devontae Smith finally start practicing again. Makai Lemon, that's a lingering hamstring injury, and you're you're starting to wonder is that gonna be something that's gonna affect their season? Dontavian Wicks, some good spots here and there. Hollywood Brown, inconsistent. So, yeah, the receiver position for the Eagles, you're watching that, and you're also watching the offensive line to see who's gonna step up because injuries are gonna factor into that group. As we were talking about earlier, Q. They're older, they're injury prone. Uh Markel Bells had a pretty good camp, the kid from Miami that they brought in that big tackle.
SPEAKER_03Uh, I will ask you this. They're not keeping four quarterbacks on the roster.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree with you.
SPEAKER_03So I I don't I I mean, the kid Peyton, he's a young kid. We know they're high. I still believe that at some point Tanner McKee is going to be the future Eagles quarterback. I'm not saying this season. But then you got Andy Dalton, obviously Jalen Hurts. I mean, who's the odd man out?
SPEAKER_01I think it may be McKee, Q. I think I think maybe they trade him, you know, if he has a little value, but they signed Andy Dalton to be that veteran guy.
SPEAKER_03You can't let you can't let McKee just you can't let him go through waivers.
SPEAKER_01You can't really crazy because they were talking up him so much a couple years ago, you know, as a possible guy who had some trade value, but we'll see. We'll see.
SPEAKER_03They obviously I mean you keep him on the roster because you know a quarterback might go down, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so if you keep four quarterbacks, then you start saying, okay, do you not have extra safety? Do you have only two safeties and then the linebackers are a number there? And then we start talking about which receivers play special teams, and you know, it's it's a lot to handle. You know, Hallie Roseman at the GM spot, he's definitely gonna have to figure this out. But four quarterbacks is definitely a luxury. I think Cole Payton, they keep him around as a developmental type. Maybe they try to slide him through and you know put him on a practice squad or something like that.
SPEAKER_03This is great. Yes, the West Coast. Man, I go on YouTube and watch old games from the 80s. Remember that? Um, 60 Minutes on the West Coast, our Sunday night movie, Murder, she wrote with the pause right there, right? I'm so old, I remember Joe DiMaggio, Mount Coffee commercials, wow, Rosuto Money Store commercials. Wow, my goodness. Well, you mentioned you saw them on, you know, uh your boat. No, are you kidding me? We remember the cult vaguely, right? When they uh left uh the Mayflower truck in the night, I started watching NFL over CFL backfield movement back in the day. Uh make a break for a win. You know, the the Colts, interesting too, right? If you go back to kind of like yesteryear in the NFL, even with the Browns, right? Because the Colts had Burt Jones always had issues, you know, with the injuries. And then you turn around and uh the the Brown, the cardiac kids back in 79, 80, they had uh Brian Seit before they had Bernie Kozar. I still believe our childhood growing up watching that NFL, hands down, was I I went back the other day and I was looking at quarterbacks in the early to mid 80s, right? So when you had the boomers, you had the Phil, Montana, Marino, Elway, you had De Berg, you had Lomax, you had um Woo uh Warren Moon. Um man, I'm trying to think.
SPEAKER_02Randall Cunningham. Right.
SPEAKER_03Well, well, but I I I'm just going early to mid, but yeah, I mean, yeah, you know, Jaworski. Yeah, sure. I I look at Cunningham a little more of the late 80s, but I know Jim Kelly, but I mean that the quarterbacking play, right, was just it was on another level back in those. They put up they put up really prolific numbers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, to me, Q. It's interesting we bring this up because I remember I did a spot on NFL Films and they brought me in and talked about the golden age of quarterbacks being today. And I I blew that you know, the houses at the water. I was like, the best quarterbacks were, you know, with Kelly and Marino and that class 83 and all those guys. I just think the the guys now with the rules and they're allowed to throw the football a lot more. You know, they're gonna be showcased a lot more than these older guys. You know, back in the day, quarterbacks are they'd be lucky to throw 20 times some of these guys. You know what I mean? Because their coach wanted to run the football and protect it.
SPEAKER_03Everyone knows Phil Sims was my guy, man. Jim Plunkett. There you go. Jim Plunkett. Who had two or three career arcs, right? Heisman Trophy winner, burnout with New England, went to San Francisco, wins two rings with the Raiders. Um, yeah, it's a different, it was a different era. It was a different game. The other thing, too, is if you even go back to the 70s, you know, when you stuck, when Landry decided we're gonna go shotgun, which no one really did in the NFL at the time, I think uh Roger Staub was the first quarterback to actually throw for over 20 touchdowns. Like in today's game, what do I always say? If you're an NFL quarterback in today's game, and if you can't throw for 25 plus touchdowns, you shouldn't be in the frigging NFL.
SPEAKER_01I agree with you, you know, and the rules are all set up for them. And the ri My thing is with the receivers, you know, these DBs, they can't put their hands on them. They they throw their hands up and then you know, they're always moving the chains, and and yeah, I just think it's a little easier in those guys and and forget, let's think about the hits. You know what I mean? Now there's special rules. If you if you take the quarterback to the ground a certain way or hit them below the knees, there's a flag. You know, back in the day, those guys were they were fighting on every play, you know, in terms of just trying to survive out there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Danny White, three straight NFC championships. You know, one of the the I think most unnoticed, underrated plays ever in NFL history, after uh Montana connects with Clark on the catch. If you go back and watch that game, The Last Possession by Dallas, um Danny White hit Drew Pearson on a slant. And Eric White, uh Eric Wright uh pulled down Pearson. Pearson was gone. It was like one of the most underrated you forget because Dallas scores there. I got news for you. We don't have the 49er dynasty, and that was Dallas's kind of last opportunity to kind of get over the hump with Dat Corps and a quarterback like Danny Wright, who, you know, much maligned in his career, but I think an underrated quarterback just never won a big game. But I I always find that kind of stuff. When I go back and I replay those games from the 80s or go on YouTube and watch some of those historic games, there's always a couple of plays that we just totally forget. We're like, oh my god, I can't believe that. In the ensuing play, boom, and Wright makes attack on uh preserves to win.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like the Pacino speech from any inch here, inch there, you know what I mean? And it's so true, you know. And then those games were they kept you on the edge of your seat. And then you talking about some are all mad and doing it. It they were events, you know what I mean, and it was months watch. And I thought it was special that they put a lot of them on Sundays, you know what I mean? You you couldn't wait for that Sunday afternoon game, you know, and the Monday night game was very special as you were talking about earlier.
SPEAKER_03Because it was standalone. It was a state, it was a standalone game. That that's what made it like for me, you know, even being in the Philly market and then moving from New York and being in that area, you know, we got the Giants. We didn't get the Giants every week. So growing up, you had to rely on what? You know, when God forbid CBS would do the ticker and you see the friggin' score pop up, right? Remember, you would see the score pop up for a second, or if you're watching the game on NBC, you know, the cutaway when they would just flash on a on a on a stagnant imaging. You're like, well, how much and the other thing is if going back, if you're watching the games on CBS, you'd have to wait for Summerall to sit there, say late in the fourth, because you know what? They never showed you the they never gave you the friggin' the clock graphic ever growing up. And you would sit there and you would be sweating your ass off thinking it well, what what's going on? Are we under five minutes? Are we near two minutes? They would just throw it flashed here and there. Now obviously it's static, and the lower third, the graphic, hangs up there forever.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the production value is definitely gone up in terms of football games, but you know, the the thing is it's the the product was was so good though, you know, and and that's why it's America's passion, it's their obsession, you know. Every everybody can't get enough of it, and and the the they're talking about football in May. You know what I mean? And that's why the draft is moving around the country and they're getting record crowds, people just sit there for uh teams calling picks.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I I still to this day, man, I'll still remember when you would were lucky enough where as soon as this game ends, we'll give you bonus coverage. Like to me, if you're a kid and your team's not on and they gave you bonus coverage, because we know the usual suspects when NBC would carry all the AFC, it was a lot of Kansas City, Miami, Buffalo, the Raiders, right? Denver back in the heyday. Oh man, but I'm telling you, when you got I'll still I'll I will never forget. Funny story, I will never ever forget this is '88. And that's the year the Giants had two brutal losses to the Eagles. The Giants finished 10 and 6. Last game of the season, Giants are playing the Jets. And uh Ken O'Brien hits Altoon in the back of the end zone. Now, I don't know that because the Giants and Jets weren't on TV. So, again, no internet. I'm running a sports phone, my father's getting pissed, put the friggin' phone down, you're not spending two dollars to get an update, right? Watching the Eagles game, and then they cut away and they show the highlight, and I'm like, you gotta effing be kidding me. Then, after the Eagles end, then they go to the final series and the Giants lose, they're knocked out of playoff contention. That was the same year. If you read the book on Parcells, I'm telling you right now, it's the same year that Parcells was pissed off at Bill Walsh because Bill Walsh knew the 49ers did match up well against those giant teams in the mid to late 80s. That Monday night, you know what Bill Walsh did? Knocked off the soul, gutless, he benched his starters against the friggin' Rams so the Rams can get in. And it pounced the Giants out of playoff games.
SPEAKER_01Well, there's Annemon, you know, those whole coaches, man. They weren't shaking hands at the end. Yeah. You know, they didn't, there was no love loss with, especially in the NFC East. You know, you and I grew up why you know you watched the Giants, I watched the Eagles, and it was just like, wow. You know, there's always that rivalry with the coaches, you know. Always buddy Ryan and like Jimmy Johnson, and just all over the place. None of none of those four teams liked each other. It just made so much fun. And then you throw in the card, the St. Louis Cardinals were in there too.
SPEAKER_03Neil Lomax, Portland State. Yeah, they were a little feisty team. Remember, too, the alignment back in the day, right? I mean, it was different alignment too. If you go AFC West, Seattle, Kansas City, the Raiders, and Denver.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the realignment was interesting and how they took some teams moving to the NFC. And then but I used to love those old divisional rivalries because you look just look forward to all the games. You know, they were there's a buildup too. You know what I mean? I used to watch the coach's show when I was a kid. Remember that they'd have that every week, and you know, they had a local TV station.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh oh, you'll appreciate this one, right? Uh one to know of a quarterback that really could have been good. Their team would have moved away from running back. Vince Evans, right? Now, Vince Evans, um, he he hung around for a long time. He wasn't an HBCU. I think he went to USC.
SPEAKER_01He went to USC. And and as you said, Rich, he he bounced, you know, he went to USFL to really finally get his chance, you know, with the Chicago team there. And then he bounced around for a while in terms of being a backup, but he was with the Raiders like almost until he was like 40. So yeah, he he was a good solid quarterback, but on a smaller side, I think sometimes he had trouble kind of seeing down the field.
SPEAKER_03How about a quarterback like Gilliam, Joe Gilliam?
SPEAKER_01Oh, you know, the guy I studied and written about a lot, and he he was one of the best, you know, in terms of I talked to a lot of people. They said he was up there in terms of him and Bradshaw competing against each other, but unfortunately, you talk about getting beat up in six uh preseason games they used to play. You know, so they played a lot of preseason games, and he started when there was a strike season, so Bradshaw wasn't in, and he got he took a lot of hits in. He was a slender guy, you know. He was built a lot like a Jaden Daniels. You know what I mean? Not a lot of meat on his bones. He said he was kind of skinny and unfortunately got beat up and then he had some substance beautiful, but he could throw the football out of Tennessee State.
SPEAKER_03Interesting. Uh Arch Manning would have been a Stellar Career. How does Stellar Career play for any other teammate? Because up to Saint Remember, too, he ended his career, I think, with the Oilers. Yeah, I mean that's that's sometimes you are a product, you know, of just where you're drafted. I I mean, there's I we can give you a litany of quarterbacks that were really good quarterbacks, but they were just drafted by poor franchises that didn't know what the hell they were doing. And I think Arch Manning is a is a perfect example because Arch Manning was you know that quarterback that really, you know, Starbucks scrambled, right? Some of these quarterbacks in the 70s tarkin and scrambled, and then you have a guy like Arch Manning that was always trying to improvise.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Archie Manning, you know, go watch if you ever heard some good documentary on the Manning's and you see his old old misstape. I mean, he was a true dual threat in college, you know, and and he goes to Saints expansion team, and yeah, you're talking about getting beat up, and you know, it was this tough situation, and and you're right. It's the right place, right time. Just think about last year about Sam Darnold. I mean, right place, right time came together for him. And, you know, unfortunately, some of these guys they run some really bad franchises.
SPEAKER_03Do you think the NFL we're at a point, though, where the expectation is if you are a top overall draft pick, like we've been debating on the chat and a couple shows, and I know you and I mentioned it with Fernando Mendoza, right? As long as the offensive line is doing their job, then you might not see him because that means cousins at least being protected. But we are in a win now mode in the NFL. These coaches need to win, especially young coaches, first-time head coaches. If you are saddled with the number one draft pick or a top five quarterback, it's not like it was 20-something years ago. There was no rush 25-30 years ago. The quarterback would back up the quarterback for not only a season, but multiple two, three, four seasons, and then finally get his shot. What why are we now at the point where if you draft him high, he better start sooner rather than later, as opposed to what we used to deal with 20 plus years ago.
SPEAKER_01Well, they used to always say they weren't NFL ready. But I I just think it's expectations, Q. You know, they see these guys lighted up on a college, and and the owners like, oh, he's a shiny new toy that we got to get him out there, we got to see what he can do. But if you research it, you know uh Caleb Williams, Ward last year, they were the most stacked quarterbacks in their rookie season, you know, and and yeah, that offensive line is key, but uh, I think the game's just so much faster in the NFL than it is in college. And college football, it's basically kind of easy, you know. You can out athlete somebody in terms of the receivers. And um, so I I just think there's a lot to learn. Why not let the guy kind of sit and wait, let the game kind of come to him? Because you see a lot of these rookie quarterbacks kind of struggle. You know, uh Brock Purdy was the aberration, you know. He he made it pretty far, but too often a lot of these guys are getting beat up and and they get discouraged, and some of them never come back from it. So um Caleb Williams has had five wins his first year, you know what I mean? So you want to probably get about six, seven wins your rookie season.
SPEAKER_03This is great. I had to deliver a machine just outside Chief Stadium in 1994. First time I heard an NFL crowd, it was deafening, even outside Steve Bono, the quarterback. That's when I became a team fan. Wow, how about that? Uh yeah, you guys got me by a couple years, it appears. Old guys rock. I mean, I mean, you know. Remember when Jim Hart retired from St. Louis Cardinals dude and being sacked so much? He said he was having nightmares. Jimmy Hart was a pretty good quarterback in his own right. I mean, he he Jim Hart, talk about longevity. I think Jimmy Hart played until he was 39, 40 years old. He put up some decent numbers too, man.
SPEAKER_01He did that. They had some tough teams there. Yeah, and you talk about Conrad Dubler and some of the that offensive line. Oh, yeah. And you know, Stump Mitchell. You know, they were a tough team. I still remember the Eagles coming there and always it was always a battle in Bush Stadium. Yeah, the Cardinals are a tough team, but they never didn't have a lot of reason. They didn't have a lot of success.
SPEAKER_03They had uh who was the uh um uh Roy Green? No, you know, it was um that tried to always defend um Pat Fisher tried to defend Carmichael. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Uh Jim Hart, uh Southern Illinois, I think, if I'm uh Yeah, I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's old school. I and I knew you talked about Neil Lomax coming there, and then they started putting up some stats, and then you know, and then they moved to Arizona.
SPEAKER_03Joey says, I don't re I didn't realize Lloyd was a northeast guy after all these years of listening to him. New York slash New Jersey. Lloyd doesn't have an accent. You know, he's you know, yeah, you know, Lloyd. I mean, you you guys can tell mine, right? Pastorami wasn't too bad. Wow.
SPEAKER_01Pastorini, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah. Now you're going to you're going to one of Lloyd's. It's interesting he mentioned that, right? Because it takes us to what? It takes us to one of the worst calls in NFL history. Wasn't he the quarterback with Renfro?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Renfro in the back of the end on Three River Stadium against the Steelers. Yeah. Yeah. He was in replay would have changed it. And you know, the Steelers were the darling team then. So he got the call. And then the poor love you blue Saints uh Oilers just, you know, Bum Phillips and Earl Campbell didn't get their chance.
SPEAKER_03That might be a uh a topic for another day. So uh yeah, we'll talk about you know the what-ifs. Um, all right, so um you and I will be uh start firing off back your play very soon. Uh obviously we'll dive into the wins losses, we'll go through the record, some of the betting lines. Um, I know you mentioned with uh preseason game number two, more about the quarterback, or I should say the position battles uh that you mentioned. And yeah, I think some of these also bridge quarterbacks, right? They need to get some of these reps in. I mean, think about it. You got what's going on with Tua. Obviously, they didn't look very good. Murray and Minnesota, they already made up their mind. How about with Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders in Cleveland? Um, it it seems as though they're leaning towards Deshaun Watson.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he was a little he was a little bit better than Shador Sanders in his past game. And then Sanders had an interception, and I think the thumb was on a scale, to be honest with you, in terms of you know, Deshaun Watson's making all that money. Jim Haslem's there paying him, and he gave him that guarantee contract. He he's gonna want to see him. So he'll get his first opportunity. But I think Shador Sanders, as the season moves along, you know, whether it's injuries or or just poor play, you're gonna see him get his chance to start.
SPEAKER_03So I mentioned this the other day, right? And when we were talking a little bit with some of these quarterbacking rooms, if you are now a young head coach in a different spot, in a different place, obviously if you look at Cleveland and their coaching staff, you need to win games out of the gate, right? So I think you go with Watson to start. If you go to Sanders and he struggles, can you still go back to Watson or do you ride it out with Sanders?
SPEAKER_01I mean, sure. They can go back. I mean, unfortunately, Cleveland's probably gonna be a pretty bad team. I see the the one texter says dumpster fire. And again, I I think Tod Munkin's got a lot to clean up there. And and now they don't have Miles Garrett on defense. You know, it's just it's going to be a scary situation for him. So I think, yeah, go to Watson. Then they'll give Shador Sanders a chance, who you're probably not going to see is Dylan Gabriel, you know, who they inexplicably drafted in the third round, and he's kind of just sitting there. So you just wonder about the plan, rhyme, or reason what the what the Browns are really doing there.
SPEAKER_03Uh I might have to walk back my Atlanta Falcons after what I saw, and them actually being uh Tua stinks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I was high on them, possibly. I think you and I previewed some of the division. I was like, oh, I think they may have a chance to win this division, but they have injuries, and and it's just like they just signed to Darius Smith. They're trying to come in there and help. It's just like they're putting a lot of band-aids all over the place. Yes, they had B. John Robinson, but with Tua, he's just inconsistent. And Michael Penix has just started, you know, doing maybe some full activity. So he's behind. So I think it's gonna be Tua. And uh we're gonna see how he plays, but he looked pretty bad last week.
SPEAKER_03I don't think Penix is a good quarterback. I still don't understand why they go out, they pay Kirk Cousins at the time as much as they did, and then you draft Michael Penix, knowing that he's an injury-prone quarterback with you know not a lot of experience. It just it just made no sense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and I think it got Raheem Morris and Fontenot, the old GM fired, to be honest with you.
SPEAKER_03Oh, of course it didn't.
SPEAKER_01Why do you gave all that money to Kirk Cousins and then you turn around and draft you know Penix, and and now you have a controversy right away. So it didn't work out. And and they have a lot of talent on offense, you know. Think about Jake Matthews at left tackle, he's one of the best, and no one really talks about it.
SPEAKER_03Good position players.
SPEAKER_01And, you know, yeah, Pitts there, and and it's just like they should do pretty well, but their defense has got to step up a little bit. Very winnable, NFC South. We always talk about that. You know, Carolina won it last year with eight wins. So maybe they can pull it together, but these injuries are piling up for them, and they then one of their best guys just got suspended for eight games.
SPEAKER_03With Mendoza, I like what Brady is doing. You have to give your team a chance to compete, and the Raiders got cousins in their own line, can give cousins time. They can be decent. I I do believe that Cousins is a perfect fit. You know, he's made enough money, he knows where he's at at this point of his career. Sure, he's competitive, but he'll mentor Mendoza, and now you got a world-class quarterback. Let's just call for what it is, you know, an all-time great, maybe the greatest of all time, and Brady, who's gonna have a hand in in the say, right? And then you turn around, you got Kubiak, that's coming off the Super Bowl win with Seattle. They've got some offensive weapons. They obviously are trying to keep their big-time defensive players, i.e. Crosby, happy. When you brought in Carol and Carol decides to bring in Geno Smith, and that offensive line was in shambles. I think you were trying to basically squeeze blood out of a stone. It cost P. Carol his job. I mean, let's just call for what it is. And I know DB has chimed in a lot regarding Mendoza. I want to see the kids sooner rather than later, but I also know, as you guys know, the offensive line has to pass protect. They they they have to because you're not going to sit them back there and be uh a sitting duck like Gino Smith was. That's that's the last thing you want to do. And I'm still trying to figure out if you break down their games, it's all subjective and it's crystal ball, but you know, if they win a couple games and Cousins is playing good football, you're not gonna see them. But if they turn around, you're starting the kid on the road against the Jets or at San Francisco at home against the. I'm trying to find a potential spot where if they struggle right out of the gate, where are you gonna place them, right? So Cousins starts a season, Miami, Chargers on the road against New Orleans, KC on the road against New England, Buffalo, the Rams. Do you start a rookie quarterback on the road against a bad Jet team? I don't know. Do you want to save it to try to bring in the fan base and maybe you do it week 12 against the Chargers?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think they're gonna play it by ear and go there. I've always pointed to that Jets game as a possibly a good spot for him to come in there now. They've kind of shorted up that offensive line with Linderbaum at center. You have Colton Miller, pretty good tackle out there. So they're gonna try to you know establish Genty first and and and then see what Cousins can do. Obviously, you're talking about Brock Bauer, so I think he's gonna have a huge season. They need Tucker or one of these other receivers to step up back, maybe. But uh they're an interesting team. It's a tough division, though, because Denver and that defense, you know, they're a scary proposition. And you if you play that rookie quarterback against them, he's just gonna be in his life.
SPEAKER_03No, you can't. Uh yes, the Sean Watson guarantee we've been talking about 100%. That's why he's gonna start. Giants, yeah, Spells D. Tracy, a nice little scat back, but you're right. I mean, did not pick up that block. I mean, that was brutal. Stefanski went from one bad team to the worst. I I I maintain the Browns have the worst quarterbacking room in the NFL. It is really, really bad. Uh, everything for Oakland starting Mendoza depends on that offensive line. I won't say how many times I've said it. Yeah, I mean, look, the offensive line, it's key, right? Um anything you're looking for uh week two preseason, or like you said, Lloyd, just you know, just some of these position battles.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this is a fun week because you these are the games that really matter. Kind of like a dress rehearsal. A lot of the coaches I talk in the past are like, all right, this is a game we're gonna see everybody, give them a long look, maybe some of the offensive guys in the first half, and then pull them because the third game nobody's playing. And and also leading up to these games, all teams are doing joint practices. Like the Eagles the Eagles are with the Patriots and they're having some lively practices. And, you know, you want to see how these guys compete against each other. So this is a big week for preseason football. And then we start talking about okay, cuts and you know what veterans may not make a team, which rookie may step forward. So that's what really what we're focusing on.
SPEAKER_03And then we will start breaking down the gambling lines, and week one will be upon us. Oh my goodness. All right, everyone, tune in to Lloyd. Give him a follow on X at Lloyd Vance and of course a host of Lloyd Vance's Insider Football. Monday, 8-9 on SR1029FN the game. That's on X. That's on the YouTube channel. Uh let me throw in one or two comments before we get out of here. Uh I think you're going to be shocked how well the Chiefs or Seahawks do this year. I mean, Seahawks defending champs. I'm still on Chiefs Super Bowl. Own fighting Irish will really play well this season. You know, I can't stand the Irish. More, not more. We understand that DV. You guys are funny. I'm telling you, it's crazy because we get you guys locked in for NFL talk, right? And then we go heavy, and and Lloyd can attest to this. It gets um it gets very uh gets a little dicey come the NFL season because typically my skin will crack by October when the Giants are like one in five, one in six. But um, all right, brother. Uh so Monday night eight to nine, correct?
SPEAKER_01Yes. Uh yeah, we're gonna go heavy on these preseason games and just get get everybody ready because it's gonna be here before we know it, the real deal.
SPEAKER_03Uh I mean is it just as you get older, the days go by faster. I literally feel like it was just a friggin' Super Bowl. I was shoveling friggin' snow, and now all of a sudden it's summer's gone, and we have the NFL right around the corner.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it goes quick. And then, you know, you anticipate that it's a long wait. You know what I mean? Because as you said, the other sports, yeah, they're just an advertiser. So I'm looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_03All right, brother. I always appreciate you, man. Thanks for the extended time. We'll talk next week, pal.
SPEAKER_01All right, cute. Thanks, Ramuel.
SPEAKER_03There you have my guy, the best in the biz, Lloyd Vance. Outstanding stuff as always. All right, don't forget, like, comment, and subscribe. Um, by the way, tomorrow uh we will um we'll see how it plays out tonight in the W. I wanted to break it up. I wanted to get into more NFL. Obviously, we're gonna start diving into um college as well soon. But just to let you know, you got a couple on the docket tonight. You got the dream in the aces, you got the fever in the tempo, Caitlin Clark with another award. I'm sure tomorrow we'll have a little fun with the show. We'll talk a little hoops and a little W. Later on the week. I want to mix in. How about Otani last night coming back and cracking two home runs? Are you kidding me? Unbelievable. He's just, you know, here we go. You know, knee is good. Otani, fine. Here we go. Uh, Dodgers trying to run away with the uh NL East right now. I mean, the Padres playing much better baseball, but we're gonna mix in a little baseball talk. I know you Mets fans, you've been struggling. I know you Yankees fans keep sitting there clamoring fire boon. Yankees are only six back of the Rays. By the way, the Rays won nine straight. They get um they lose three straight to the O's. They actually lose three out of four in that series. They salvaged the series, they avoid the suite with the seven to six win. They have a couple coming up against Toronto. So we'll mix in a little baseball talk as well. DB says fire boon. What else is new? Uh we will definitely get into college. I promise you. I promise you, I promise you, we will get into college football. Costco's gonna join us from 24-7. John Bueller from Fan Sited. Uh also, because you're a Chiefs fan, I will tell you that uh James Hasty is going to be doing a um uh we're trying to work out a weekly spot with James during the NFL season. Uh wonderful defensive back that played for the Jets, Kansas City, and the Raiders. Uh he's got a very unique tool out there called C Pass, which is coaching performance assessment systems, which it kind of rates and grades coaching performances in the NFL. He's a good friend of the show. So he's gonna be joining us during the um NFL season as well. Make or break for Detroit. Yes, that's one of the coaches I had on the hot seat was Dan Campbell, and 100% uh make or break for Detroit. They got to make a deep run, especially after what transpired last year, how they finished in that division. Yes. I think that I think Campbell, so I started off the show. My four or five coaches on the hot seat, Glenn Bowles, Dan Campbell. I also think Dan Quinn is without a doubt on the hot seat in Washington. How many layups is Reese going to miss tonight? Oh, Michael. You know, I was actually, I I think I was I was very fair. By the way, I I did post about a 10-minute video on Clark and the MVP conversation. Uh let me see what I guess now we got to do the prop bet with Angel Reese, right? Let me let me tell you right now what her what her props are. Let me shut that off. Angel Reese. Prop bets for tonight. Uh let me see. Fifteen and a half points. Fifteen and a half points. And I'm trying to find rebounds double digits. She's opposed to double digits boards in six or seven career games versus Vegas. So her over is twelve and a half board. She's hitting that in the first quarter. She's gonna hit that in the first quarter. Angel Reese will have eight points and 15 rebounds tonight. Yes, agree. We're gonna hit tomorrow. I gotta hit it because they're playing tonight, to your point. But yes, we got some college football talk. Costco's gonna start joining us. If you haven't listened to the show, Nick is unbelievable with college football. We break down all the conferences, we have a ton of fun with that. Stan hasn't played for the Yankees since late April. Yeah, he's that to me, that was such a waste of a move. I hate it to move for Stanton, and I'm a Yankees fan. Look, all you're concerned about is making a deep run in the postseason, but I don't like the way this roster is constructed. I've said it. I can't trust pitching. I can't trust Boone. I just can't. This team is such an enigma. They're hot, they're cold, they're hot, they're cold. They're hot, they're cold. They just placed Freed on the uh 15-day DL. I know they activated Rodan. Um, you know, you you can't get away with having Bellinger your best hitter hitting 259. Now, Ben Rice is having a phenomenal season. He really is. Um, but yeah, I just don't, and the judge injury hurt. I just don't like the makeup of this team. I just don't watching AR miss is like watching uh the aftermath of a vehicle accident you don't want to watch, but you do. We call it the train wreck. You slow down for the train wreck, right? All right, so tomorrow, yes. I uh I will say Caitlin Clark tonight. I'm gonna say Clark. Uh they got Toronto tonight on the road. She had 45 against them, if you remember. She's probable again with the back injury, but I'm not buying any of that. I'm gonna say Caitlin Clark plays 32 minutes tonight. They blow out Toronto. She has 28 and 12. So I'll put it in right now. 28 and 12. They win on the road. I shouldn't say blowout because uh no, that the game against Seattle, she had 45 and 10. Pardon me. I'm not gonna say they blow out Toronto, uh, but they're laying 10 and a half. I don't like the hook. They win it by eight. They win it by eight. She has 28 and 12. Angel Reese over 15 rebounds. You can bookmark that in there. I don't understand. My camera's not there instead of there is no rhyme or reason to what they're doing. None. 25-11. Let's let's bookmark it 25 and 11 and 5. 25 and 11 and 5. All right. We put it in there. It's in pen. All right. Uh, we posted a couple more uh videos, check out on the channel. By the way, if you do like the NFL content, we have all our divisions that we broke down. We also did a show the other day about uh the quarterbacking room. Check that out. I also have some running backs that I broke down that I think are breaking down this season as well. But as I mentioned, a little more hoops, W tomorrow, Thursday and Friday, NFL heavy as well. If anything breaks, we'll have it here on the channel. Keep it locked in right here. Tuesday edition of Own Q. Rich can you on us here? Like, comment, subscribe, click the notifications. You guys are awesome. I love the fact that you guys are getting ready for NFL talk. Yes, absolutely, yes, there you go. Bowl's gone. Glenn should have been gone after the debacle last year to close out the season when they gave up so many points, and they were 0-7 to start the season before they got that first win against Cincinnati. And I think Dan Quinn is definitely on the hot seat. And the other thing that's you know what is going to screw Dan Quinn? He fired his coordinators to save his ass, like Lloyd alluded to. And you're bringing over young guys that are green. White can mess you up, folks. Yes. The head coach is goofy. We know that as well as you do. Michael B. Well. All right, guys, we're gonna wrap it up. Back Adam Iñana. Check out the notifications. Don't forget, coffee on me, fresh roasted coffee, BYP20. And also, you can check out on Q20. I mean, that's a foregone conclusion, but they were never gonna do anything after he little had his little tango dance with Deanna Rossini. You and I both know that, DB. Back at him in Yana on a Wednesday edition, a Wusa Wednesday. I'm telling you, if she goes off tonight, and I think too, if you get the late game, and I'm pretty positive the Dream of the Aces play tonight, right? That's one of the late, late games. Man, that would be something. If Wilson struggles a little bit and Clark goes off tonight, then we can have a little fun with the uh MVP conversation again. But a lot more football later in the week. We're gonna start tapping into college football as well. We'll start to break down the big-time college um conferences, and then uh we'll certainly post that up on the channel. Also, for those down south, uh, the Destin FM scoreboard show that I do, we are gonna start doing a Destin FM Emerald Coast edition of the scoreboard show, which will basically be focused on the pro and college teams down there uh around the panhandle. So definitely keep that locked in. That'll be on the channel. You guys are fantastic. Appreciate you hanging for an hour and a half. Everyone have a wonderful uh sports Tuesday. We're back at it, Minana. Another edition of On Q. As always, I'm Rich Canyonis. Be safe, be sound. Hasta luego Mandia.
